Hugely spectacular volcanic island that everybody should see. Direct flights now make this much easier from the UK.
Stunning views, beautiful villages, great public transport and some good beaches. Cosmopolitan and lively but can be expensive. The island was devastated in the 16th century BC by a volcanic eruption that destroyed the Minoan civilisation. Important archaeological excavations are now underway at Akrotiri, uncovering the town that was buried by volcanic ash.
