Chios (Χίος)
A large island that is difficult to fully explore without a car but is well worth a visit. Only around 7 miles from the coast of Turkey.
We saw the most interesting parts in the south using buses and on foot and it was well worth the effort. It is unlike any other Greek island and has few concessions to tourism. Nevertheless it is fascinating with lots of different things to see, including the '14th century 'mastic' villages of Pirgi, Masta and Olympi, and the fertile citrus farming area of Kambos with its beautiful restored neo-classical mansions . Well worth investigating and we would like to go back and see the rest of it.
