Alonissos (Αλόννησος)
One of our favourite islands. The clearest water in the Aegean and great for walking and snorkelling. Photos are from 1997, 2005, 2009 and 2017.
Alonissos is the only Greek island that is part of a Marine National Park, home to the rare Mediteranean Monk Seal. The easiest way to get there is to fly to Skiathos then take a ferry, which stops at Skopelos on the way. The old hilltop Chora (village) was badly damaged in the 1965 earthquake and then pretty much abandoned as people relocated to the small port at Patitiri. Most of the old buildings have since been restored and there a quite a few ex-pat Brits living there.
