Athens or Athina (Αθήνα)
One of the world's greatest capital cities and the birthplace of civilisation, philosophy and democracy. The Acropolis and its museum are not to be missed.
Athens is well worth a city break on its own, with world class historical sites and museums, fantastic restaurants with open air dining, and lots of cafes and shops. The city's port, Piraeus, is the starting point for much island hopping and it is worth stopping in the capital for a day or two on the way there or back, if only to see the Acropolis, its new museum, and the attractive Plaka district.
