Background

In 1992 we were snorkelling in the clear, but cold, English Channel at Durdle Door in Dorset when we thought how much nicer it would be to be doing this somewhere a bit warmer. So, the following year we took a package holiday to Paros and immediately fell in love with everything about Greece.

We have been back at least once a year since then, mostly travelling independently, and very rarely returning to stay at the same place more than once. So far we have visited over 35 locations, both on the islands and the mainland, and we will be continuing our explorations over the coming years.

Welcome to Greek Images. To see pages for the individual islands just click on the drop-down menus at the top of the page, or the links at the bottom.

Featured Image - Andros

With my Greek photography I have tried to convey something of the essence of the different places that we have visited, including the wildlife. Hopefully you will find the images are either informative, artistic, or entertaining. I didn't want to just show the traditional views of all villages and beaches - most of the islands have their own web sites that show this sort of thing.

If you enjoy what you see and would like me to add a link to your web site, please e-mail me with details. I will generally be happy to do this on a reciprocal basis.

Any comments on the photos or the site in general would be welcome.

Technical Stuff
I had been keeping a record of our travels, initially using a Minolta X300 SLR and later a 700si, but always using Fuji slide film. A few years ago it occured to me that it would be fun, if somewhat time consuming, to get some of these images into digital format and post them on the web. So I acquired a high resolution film scanner and the idea for Greek Images was born. It has developed a lot since then, with new locations being added, and new facilities, such as the links to Google Maps. Needless to say, I have since gone digital, with a Nikon D80 and 18-200 VR lens.
All photographs are strictly copyright and may not be reproduced in any form without permission. However, I am generally happy for them to be used on other web sites as long as a link is provided back to Greek Images. But please ask first.

Latest News
All islands and mainland locations now have a link to Google Maps so you can see where they are. Photos of Andros (Cyclades) now uploaded. More of Athens and Serifos to follow in the next few weeks. All main island pages have now been redesigned. I have now also changed the layout of the home page. Let me know what you think. The featured images will be updated every few days.

Independent Travelling in Greece

The weather is usually at its best, ie not too hot, in June and September, when places are rarely crowded, and you can always find accommodation when you get there. The secret to getting the most out of your holiday is to look on the journey and transfers as all part of the Greek Island experience. It is a state of mind and we always say our holiday starts as soon as we walk out of our front door in England. This attitude is summed up beautifully in the poem 'Ithaca', by C P Cavafy. Translated by Rae Dalven.
